Engine Block Requirements

Engine Block
When looking for a suitable engine block, make sure that you keep in mind your application. Engine blocks for stock rebuilds are certainly more forgiving. It would not matter too much if the block you intend to purchase will clean up at .040 oversize. But if you intend on purchasing an engine block for high performance applications, you most likely will be looking for a new block or a block that will clean up with the least amount of material to come off - thus preserving the strength of the block.

All Engine Blocks are Not Created Equal

In most cases, visitors to our website are looking for the best deal on an engine block. While the price of a block can be a motivating factor, please consider the amount of machine work that will be needed to bring the block up to acceptable tolerances. Even the appearance of some engine blocks will require degreasing or baking and shot blasting. Engine blocks that have sat outside for years, typically can be rusted to the point where a .060 overbore is required.

When a reconditioned or remanufactured engine block is desired, please take into consideration the tolerances to which the engine block was machined. While most automotive machine shops are fully competent, we have seen reconditioned engine blocks that had steel shot clung to grease which was left in the oil galleys. And even worse, we have seen rebuilt engine blocks which were machined well outside of acceptable tolerances.
